Frequently Asked Questions

GoSwiss – German Language Integration Programme unique to FG Basel

What is GoSwiss?
GoSwiss is a language and integration programme designed to support children from international families as they transition into the Swiss school system. It focuses on German language acquisition, cultural orientation, and social integration.

Is GoSwiss a replacement for regular school?
No, GoSwiss is not a replacement for regular schooling; it is a supplementary transitional programme that supports simultaneous integration. Children begin integrating into the Swiss school system from day one, while receiving targeted language and academic support to ensure long-term success.

Who is the programme for?
GoSwiss is aimed at school-age (4 to 16) children who are either new to Switzerland or already live here yet do not yet speak German fluently. It is especially suited for families seeking a smooth and supported integration into local schools.

What age groups are accepted?
The programme is designed for children from Kindergarten to upper secondary school (roughly ages 4 to 16). Entry into kindergarten is possible as soon as the child turns 4. Placement is based on language level and educational background. To organise a trial at our school click here. We look forward to hearing from you.

What does the GoSwiss curriculum include?
The curriculum focuses on intensive German language instruction according to the Swiss Curriculum, subject-specific language support (e.g. maths, science in German), cultural education, and social learning. Activities include classroom lessons, group projects, excursions, and more.

How long does a child stay in the GoSwiss programme?
The duration varies depending on the child. The programme is designed in three phases (see link), allowing for flexible and individual progression. Integration begins on day one — students are supported in participating in mainstream activities as their language skills and confidence grow.
